Case Studies> > Windows USB Wireless Lan Station/AP Driver

The Challenge
The challenge was to develop a device driver for USB wireless LAN chipset on Windows. The chipset supports both station mode and host based AP mode.

The Solution

The requirement needed the implementation of a Windows USB NDIS driver for the station support. The driver would have a NDIS miniport upper edge for the protocol interface and a WDM lower edge for the USB communication. The driver would also convert Ethernet packet frame format to WLAN format for Station implementation. The host based Access point support was added by including the Access point protocol support where the time critical events such as beacon sending was done by the hardware and the rest is implemented in software. The support implemented in software includes Association, Disassociation and Authentication.

The software was developed in 4 months time on Windows 2000/98/98SE/XP.

The Technology

The complexity of the project was in understanding the intricacies of the wireless LAN protocol.

The Result

This project enabled GRACELABS to build on its technical resources in the areas of Wireless LAN and USB drivers on Windows platforms.
